The A/C guy probably isn’t the first person you want on your speed dial. But a friendly, seasonal preventive maintenance visit can extend the life of your system and save you on unnecessary repairs down the line.

So What is Preventive Maintenance?

Just like you wash and wax your car to preserve your paint job, and change the oil to keep the engine running smoothly, you should schedule preventive maintenance checks to keep your heating and cooling equipment running like new. It’s not only good for your system, it’s good for you, too, because you’ll save energy dollars and enjoy enhanced home comfort!

What does the technician actually do during a preventive maintenance visit? Well, as you can imagine, there’s a lot going on “under the hood” of your heating and cooling system. And while much of it is too technical and boring to cover in great detail, each part and process has to be just right for your system to run efficiently.

Some of the items your technician will check include:

  • Refrigerant charge
  • Fan and compressor
  • Condenser coil
  • Capacitors
  • Contractor points
  • Thermostat and mounting
  • Blower
  • Circuit components
  • Temperature switch
  • Float switch and its operation

If anything on the checklist isn’t functioning properly, or if your tech spots a problem on the horizon, you’ll learn about it during this preventive maintenance visit. That way, these problems can be addressed long before they compromise your comfort and safety, and before they cause expensive damage to your system.

In addition to this system checkup, your technician will perform a few routine maintenance tasks to keep your system efficient until the next visit. These include:

  • Brushing out the electrical cabinet
  • Changing the air filter
  • Lubricating all moving parts
  • Flushing and vacuuming the drain line and pan to evaluate drainage
  • Cleaning the exterior of the equipment

Several months prior I worked with Craig on getting one of several quotes for our aging system. I felt very comfortable with Craig and Scott's overall. A few major storms blew through and we decided to wait a bit longer till the system died and could leverage a home warranty we had.
